Many travelers may not be aware of the many things to do in Mexico. Officially called the United Mexican States, Mexico is a beautiful and diverse country which still reflects the flavor and influence of its Spanish, Aztec and Mayan ancestry. From ancient ruins in the jungle area to sweeping expanses of blue coastlines, there are many great tourist attractions in Mexico.
Mayan and Aztec Ruins: Mexico's history can't be truly understood unless the story of its ancient history is told. There are many accessible and mysterious ruins in the southern and central area of Mexico. The Mayan ruin, Mayapan, which can be found in Yucatan, is a classic reflection of this proud race. Don't miss Teotihuacan, an Aztec ruin featuring the "Avenue of the Dead" and "Pyramid of the Sun" found at this massive archeological excavation.
Puerto Escondido: This charming costal town must have been a well-kept secret in the past as its name translates to "Hidden Port". Located in the state of Oaxaca near the southern tip of Mexico, the beaches are favorites of locals and travelers. You may be lucky enough to catch the annual surfing championships. Wander the cobbled streets and listen for the sound of guitars and singers preparing for the evening festivities. Visiting this town is one of the lesser known things to do in Mexico but should not be missed.
Palenque, Mexico
Historical Museum of the Mexican Revolution: Walk the halls once frequented by the famous General Francisco Villa in this home-turned-museum in Chihuahua city of Chihuahua state. The architecture of the building has not changed since those days and has authentic displays of the rooms General Villa and his wife lived in plus weapons and photographs from that tumultuous time in Mexico's history.
The Degollado Theater, as it is translated, is jewel of a surprise hidden within Guadalajara. Built in 1866, its neo-classical style will make you wonder if you've stumbled into Rome, Italy. The columns and painting will draw your eye while you prepare to take your seat in the expansive interior. Performances are ongoing and feature both contemporary and classic themes.
Cathedral of Puebla: This Roman Catholic cathedral can be found in Puebla City, which shares its name with the state of Puebla, Mexico. It was originally built in 1575 and designed by the architect Francisco Becerra. Later consecrated to the Virgin Mary in 1649, it still stands as a breathtaking sight. The interior is filled with historical finds of that time period.
El Rosario Monarch Reserve: The amazing migration of millions of monarch butterflies terminates in the El Rosario Reserve. The butterflies travel thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to winter here at the sanctuary. They completely cover the tree trunks, which produce just enough heat to keep them warm at night, and spend their time resting and feeding. It is truly a spectacular sight during the months of November through April, so try to plan your visit during the migration.
Floating Gardens of Xochimilco: This colorful and lively city is known for its winding and peaceful canals which are all that's left of a huge lake gone long ago. Float down the canals in one of the festive trajineras (translated to Xochimilco boats) past the floating gardens of various local crops and flowers which line the waterways.
Sian Ka'an Biosphere: This unique reserve was originally founded by a conservation committee, and is located in Quintana Roo state. Declared a national park in 1986, the reserve is the site of conservation projects and studies for improving the use of natural resources and sustainability.
