Things to Do in Malta

There are a wide variety of interesting things to do in Malta for anyone who has the fortune to vacation on this beautiful island. Located in the southern portion of Europe, Malta is made up of many small islands and became an independent nation in 1964 and officially named the Republic of Malta 10 years later. There are also many attractions in Malta that travelers can visit and explore. Malta's history makes it a fascinating stop for any traveler and boasts a Mediterranean climate of dry summers and rainy but mild winters.

Lower Barrakka Gardens: Overlooking the Grand Harbor in Valletta, these gardens welcome weary travelers with the soothing sound of splashing fountains and birdsong drifting from the trees. A stunning monument to Sir Alexander Ball honors this British governor, the first to rule over Malta. The Great Siege of Malta, waged in 1565, is also remembered by a monument dedicated to this invasion by the Ottoman Empire. Strolling around the gardens is one of many fun things to do in Malta.

Manoel Theater: You'll find this unique historical and working theater in the city of Valletta, the capital city of Malta. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra makes it home in this small but lavishly decorated auditorium. Gold leaf adorns the wooden structure and a ceiling of pale blue gives the illusion of the open sky above your head. This theater is considered to be number 3 in the list of Europe's oldest working theaters.

Church of St. Paul: According to the Bible, Malta was the temporary home of St. Paul and several members of his party when they were shipwrecked on the way to Rome. The sparse and barren grotto where he stayed is now located below this beautiful church, built in the 17th century. Thought to also be where St. Paul preached during his stay, this church attracts a continuous stream of visitors.

Malta Maritime Museum: The sea is an integral part of Malta's history and this fascinating museum is full of all facets maritime life. Authentic scale model replicas of ships from the 19th and 20th century can be found in the Merchant Navy exhibit. Tools of sailors throughout time are displayed and navigational maps and instruments show the evolution of sea exploration.

National Museum of Fine Arts: Malta is proud of its artistic heritage and the National Museum houses a wide and varied collection of works. Painting and sculpture date as far back as the 1400's. Furniture and silverware showcase exquisite craftsmanship. The Museum building at one time was the home many royal families and is a stunning work of art in itself.

The Citadel: The city of Gozo, also referred to as Victoria, is where you'll find this medieval fortress overlooking the village. The Citadel has a violent and varied past. Massive walls and towers were built as a place of protection from the raiding Barbary pirates. Citizens of Gozo once slept every night within its gates until more peaceful times allowed settlement in the surrounding land.

St. James Cavalier Center for Creativity: Malta may have a rich past, but it also is proud of its vision of the future. This unique center was designated the Millennium Project of the Maltese Government and opened in the year 2000. Dedicated to contemporary art and creativity, the Center hosts operas, art exhibitions and works of local and international artists.

Fontanella Tea Garden: All that sightseeing makes anyone hungry and thirsty so take a much needed rest at the lovely Fontanella garden. Located in the medieval walled city of Mdina at Bastion Square, the courtyard is festive with colored umbrellas and the stonework reflects the historic feel of the city. Sample one of the delicious desserts while enjoy the view of the city below.
