Things to Do in Italy

There are so many things to do in Italy that it could take more than a few days to fully enjoy them all. Regardless of which destination or tourist attraction in Italy you choose a visit with the people of this country is sure to be an memorable one.

Italy is known world over for its artistic, religious and educational contributions that have spanned thousands of years. The Etruscans are considered by many to the first of many cultures that built and developed a form of government in Italy. Etruscans founded a city that would later become the capitol of the ancient world, Rome.

Rome: For centuries Rome ruled most of Europe. Expanding their civilization and rule as far north as Britain and south into Africa, the city was influenced by civilizations around the globe. Some of the most visited locations include the Coliseum, the Fontana di Trevi where coins are tossed over ones shoulder, and the Roman Forum. The Vatican, an independent state within the city is home to the Pope. Daily tours will leave you in awe at the magnificent art and items of historical significance. Step back into literature with some of the tourist attractions in Italy.

Venice: Rising from the waters Venice really does look like what movies and literary works describe. Venice established its place in history by focusing its attention on the highly sought after trade goods from the east. One of the many industries that Venice is famous for is their glassworks. Venice, like most Italian destinations, is best experienced by walking. However boat tours using the canals are also available and really must be experienced at least once. Festivals, religious and cultural events are held regardless of weather conditions. Bring your umbrella and your sunscreen when you visit this fascinating city.

Florence: Considered by scholars to be the mother of the Renaissance, Florence may be the most breathtaking city to behold. The palaces of Medici-Riccardi and Strozzi, which are surrounded by the original streets, whisper of the royal past of this town. The domed cathedral of Santa Maria de Fiore stands out among the city's skyline. The Academy of Fine Arts and Bargello Museum are rich with history and art displays.

Pompeii: Walking through the ruins of Pompeii, visitors can feel history come alive. Vesuvius erupted and buried this town under tons of ash and volcanic debris in August of the year 79 A.D. Unique in many ways, Pompeii has maintained some of the ancient stepping stone paths that were placed there to keep residents from stepping in the dirty water that filled the streets. Tourists will want to visit the open air Triangular Forum, walk down the Street of Tombs and marvel at the frescos in the Villa of Mysteries, that seem to depict a time when secret rituals for women were important. Choosing what things to do while in Italy will be difficult.

Genoa: Experiencing the diversity of cultures that are found in this port city is one of this city's alluring charms. Royal palaces sit next door to quaint residential houses where stone streets are lined with churches made of marble. Most of the alleyways are full of street vendors hawking their wares and the smell of coffee and pesto permeate the air. The real side of Genoa is found in these hideaways since this is where the locals meet to chat about their day.

Although well known by many, seeing this breath taking work of art in person surpasses all expectations. Milan also is home to the beautiful Castello Sforzesco castle which contains many museums and art galleries including collections of Michelangelo's sculptures.

Grotta Nuova di Villanova: Located outside the Alta Val Torre and near the town of Villanova, this wondrous cave is a well kept secret. Tours take visitors into the magnificent caverns to see other worldly limestone formations. Even if you're a seasoned cave explorer, you'll see unique and amazing formations at this natural wonder.

Tuscany: Tuscany is truly a food lover's paradise and there's no lack of places to dine. Close to the center of town, the Trattoria il Saraceno boasts world famous chefs and local wine that rivals any in Italy. Don't miss pastry sampling at Nimphaea or wine tasting tours to the Castle of Chianti or Montalcino.
