Here are some of my favorite things to do in Greece, that land cluster in southern Europe that has long been known for its beautiful coasts and rich history and culture. Attractions in Greece are intriguing and varied. Indeed, this Mediterranean peninsular is a treasure trove of wonders that are just waiting to be unveiled by every visitor.
Athens: One of the popular things to do in Greece is to visit the city of Athens, which is the capital of Greece. Divided into several districts, Athens is a city with classical Greek culture that shows off the proud heritage inherited from ancient Greece, with an injection of trendy new shops and cafés through the city. Visit the Acropolis, the ancient high city, or take a walk along the streets of Psiri with its cafés and bars in the nights.
Corfu: Sunny Corfu lies off the coast of the Adriatic Sea, known for its endless sandy white beaches and beautiful waters. Visit the island for some of the most spectacular beach holidays that you will experience. While there, visit the Achilleion, a palace built in the late 19th century with the mythical hero Achilles as the theme.
Meteora Monasteries
Rhodes: Visit Rhodes Town, one of Greece's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and walk along the streets of one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Visit some of the museums, including the Rhodes Archaeological Museum, which offers a tour of the city walls. Alternatively, have Mythos (local beer) along one of Rhodes' gravel beaches in the warmth of the Grecian sun.
Crete: Visit Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, and its Archaeological Museum that holds the remains of a 3000-year-old Minoan civilization. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is the setting for some of the most famous Greek myths, such that of the labyrinth and the Minotaur. Those who enjoy nature would also find Crete a beautiful place - visit the Lasithi Plateau and the Zeus Cave, or explore the Zakros Valley and its Neolithic tombs on the gorge walls.
Delphi: An ancient temple in the ancient times, Delphi is now a famous UNESCO World Heritage site. Delphi was built for the most important oracle to the god Apollo, and was of importance in ancient Greece as being the center of the universe. See the ruins of the temple of Apollo, the Treasury and the Theater made entirely out of stone, and without the help of modern machinery.
Olympias: The site of the classical Olympic Games, Olympias is celebrated once every four years when the Olympic flame of the modern Games is lit in the city and transported to the new host country. Another classic ancient Greek city, Olympias contains many treasuries, theatres and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus that once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the gold and ivory statue of the god Zeus.
Ithaca: An island in the Ionian Sea, Ithaca is the legendary home of the Greek hero Odysseus. Several sites and monuments scattered around the island reminds tourists of this, although geographically, Ithaca has not been proven to correspond to the description in Homer's Odyssey. Nevertheless, Ithaca oozes a small town charm that is welcoming to all visitors.
Metéora: The Metéora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance to those found on Mount Athos. However, Mount Athos has forbidden entry to tourists; hence the Metéora has become a popular tourist destination, with its display of six monasteries. Each of these is built on sandstone rock pillars, and has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In every way, Greece is unique from so many other tourist destinations. There are an abundance of things to do in Greece and it is a wonderful place for any tourist to visit.
