The Fortress of Suomenlinna: A small island at the entrance to the Helsinki Harbor is home to one of the largest 18th century military fortresses. Influence by the British, the architectural design is just one of the many reasons this site was listed as a historic treasure by UNESCO in 1991. Suomenlinna is also home to over 900 permanent Helsinki residents. The fortress is considered a suburb of Helsinki. Visiting the fortress is one of the very popular attractions in Finland.

Castles: The 13th century castle at Turku has been restored to its medieval glory. Visitors can walk among original medieval houses and watch traditional trade work being done by craftsmen. Christmas at the castle at Turku features the reading of a proclamation that has been read every Christmas since the Middle Ages. Sitting on the edge of a tiny island is the Castle of St. Olaf of Olavinlinnia. This castle has three towers and was heavily influenced by the Russian Orthodox Church. One of the few castles with a bailey, a walled courtyard where knights would gather before riding out to fight a battle, St. Olaf's castle could have been pulled from a fairytale. The Hame Castle of Hameen Iinnia was built in the 13th century. This Hame Castle is unique as it served as a prison from 1837 through 1972. Much of the inside of this castle has been remodeled but the original moat and structure remains as it was in the 13th century.
