Things to Do in England

There are a number of fun things to do in England; a fascinating country with a rich history. You could spend months exploring and still barely scratch the surface of all the tourist attractions in England, but here are some of the most popular ones to visit. Make sure you get The London Pass, the leisure pass that lets you experience the best that London has to offer

Big Ben: Big Ben is the bell inside the St. Stephens clock tower. Throughout the world, it is one of London's most recognizable landmarks. Big Ben rings every hour and is the site of a large New Year's Eve countdown every December 31st. Adjacent to the clock tower is the Palace of Westminster, which houses the Parliament. Guided tours are available unless Parliament is in session.

Buckingham Palace: Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the royal family. The enormous palace boasts 52 bedrooms and 78 bathrooms, as well as 92 offices. Outside of the palace you can see the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony. During the summer visitors can take a tour of the palace. Visiting Buckingham Palace is one of the most popular things to do in England.

Stonehenge: Stonehenge is another iconic English landmark. This giant stone circle was built sometime between 3000 and 1600 BC. It attracts hundreds of sightseers every day, who come to marvel at the idea that ancient societies moved these stones (some are as heavy as 50 tons) without the benefit of modern machines.

London Zoo: The London Zoo opened in 1828. In 1938 they opened the world's first children's zoo. They are also responsible for opening the first reptile house, insect house, and public aquarium. The zoo is home to approximately 12,000 animals and also offers beautiful gardens and fascinating architecture.

Westminster Abbey: Westminster Abbey is England's most frequently visited religious site. It was built by Henry III in the thirteenth century. It is the site of every monarch's coronation since it was built, including the current Queen. It is also the site for a number of royal funerals. Many influential English people are buried here, including Charles Darwin, Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Mary I, James I and Charles II.

British Museum: The British Museum was established in 1753. Its purpose was to promote a better understanding of the fine arts among the public. One of the museum's most famous artifacts is the Rosetta Stone. The museum is also home to the controversial Elgin Marbles, which many people believe should be returned to Greece, their place of origin. The British Museum is also home to the Great Court, a large public square covered by an impressive glass roof. Specific exhibitions in the museum may charge a fee, but generally admission is free.

Harrods: If you are in the mood to do some shopping, head over to Harrods, London's most famous department store. It is named for Charles Henry Harrod, who started out as a grocer and turned his small grocery store into a large department store that is synonymous with elegance and class. Be sure to stop by the Harrods' gift shop.
