Things to do in Croatia

There are many things to do in Croatia and travelers are finding that a visit is filled with unexpected and memorable activities and sights. Croatia has long been avoided by tourists due to the ethnic and civil problems experienced, but there's no longer any reason to stay away from this beautiful country.

Croatia, which is officially known as the Republic of Croatia, shares borders with Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia. Its largest stretch of land is a stunning coastline along the Adriatic Sea. Comparable in size to West Virginia, Croatia has a variety of climates depending on how far inland you travel. Humidity is low in the summer and winters are snowy and typical of this part of Europe.

Museums: One of the oldest museums in Croatia is the Archeological Museum, which was founded in 1920. Located in the town of Split which is on the Dalmatian coast in Croatia's southwest corner, this museum contains prehistoric archeological finds as well as items from the colonial Greek period, early Rome and Medieval and Christian times. Antique coins and a library are also on display.

Ancient Ruins: Make a trip into the town of Dubrovnik and explore this mysterious and aged city. The architecture of Dubrovink was impressive even in the 13th century and the walls surrounding the city were built over a 200 year period. Climb up the stairways and feast your eyes on the sweeping sea vistas.

Theater: Located in the city of Zagreb, theater lovers will delight when they attend a performance at the Croatian National Theater. This historic theater, constructed in 1894, is considered a treasure in itself. A working theater, the Croatian National Theater has a constant schedule of performances to choose delight and entertain.

Sea Kayaking, Diving and Sailing: Croatia's borders also include over a thousand islands dotting the sparkling sea, and sea kayaking is a popular sport. Whether novice or experienced, you'll have no problem locating rental shops and guides if desired. Diving is popular as the islands host an amazing array of sea life and the sea is often filled with sail boats hugging the coast.

Shopping: With such a rich history, it's no surprise that Croatia is the center of a unique and lively artistic population. You'll find hand crafted artwork found no where else which you'll want to bring home as a reminder of your Croatia vacation. Don't miss a visit to The Wandering Camel in Dubrovnik where you'll find some of the best offerings of Croatian food gifts such as local wine and olive oils.

Explore the night: Croatia is well into the modern age as its cities light up at night with music and dance. Visit an electronic jazz club or sample the authentic Slavic performances that can be found just about anywhere. You may need to sleep in the next day as you'll want to spend all night sampling the variety of after-dark attractions in Croatia.

Rock Climbing: Croatia has unusual geographic features which attract many rock climbers. The mountains consist of a substance called karst, which is a limestone that is porous and makes for easy climbing. The Paklenica National Park has over 400 climbing routes and is perfect for beginners or seasoned climbers. Don't miss a visit to the Anica kuk, a famous 1,148 foot high cliff face.

Even with all these activities, there is still so many more things to do in Croatia. With warm and hospital people to greet you, you'll find yourself drawn back to this beautiful country over and over. Consider Croatia when planning your next dream vacation.
